DIETARY DOs AND DON'Ts

DO

  • Provide a constant supply of fresh hay
  • Provide a constant supply of good quality guinea pig food
  • Provide a constant supply of fresh clean water
  • Feed plenty of fresh veg & fruit
  • Allow your guinea pigs to mow the lawn for you (in a safe secure run)
  • Give your guinea pigs your vegetable trimmings, fruit cores, skins etc
  • Feed dried grass (especially in wet weather when they can't go on the lawn)
  • Give your guinea pigs a small log from a fruit tree to gnaw on

DON'T

  • Feed anything with artificial additives in it
  • Feed anything cooked
  • Feed anything sugary (including honey)
  • Feed stale, wilting, mouldy, bruised or otherwise 'off' veg or fruit
  • Feed lettuce
  • Feed potatoes
  • Put your guinea pigs on a lawn which is densely covered in daisies and / or buttercups. (a few don't seem to do harm)
  • Feed grass from a lawnmower collecting box - this can be VERY dangerous as it begins to ferment very soon after cutting
  • Feed anything picked from a roadside or around a farmer's field
  • Feed anything treated with pesticides, fertilizers or other chemicals
